Chairperson's Message

Welcome to the 2009 Classic Boat Festival - our twentieth anniversary event. It promises to be one of the busiest yet with activities and events that will interest every member of the family.

Of particular interest is the large contingent of classic wooden boats from the South Shore, in particular the Chester Classic Fleet. These are some of the most beautiful wooden sailboats in existence and they are becoming rarer every year.

On Saturday, August 1, the traditional re-enactment of the Burning of the Teazer will be staged. The rogue crew of the Teazer, pursued by ships and crew of the Royal Navy, will again be joined by the King's Orange Rangers in uniform, the soldiers' 'mollies' in period costume and other players dressed in the garb of their day. And you can join in! The Festival Committee extends an invitation to everyone who is planning to attend to wear a costume suitable to the occasion as we turn the Town Wharf into an early 19th century mall where all manner of townsfolk stroll in their finery. Put together a costume of your favourite period character - soldier, sailor, pirate or strumpet; farmer, fishwife, boat builder or tradesperson. You can even dress your youngsters in period costumes. Make it a family event! Every costume will add to the character to the Burning of the Teazer presentation. This is your chance to be part of the show.

The prizes in our Classic Boat Festival Raffle are extraordinary this year and we will again be hosting the Grand Fund-raising Silent Auction on August 1. You will even have an opportunity to bid on a sail in the bay followed by dinner with the captain and mate of the schooner Ntloheleng - a prime seat from which to watch the burning of the Teazer!

And of course there will be workshops for adults and children, harbour tours, oxen dory launch, street parade, entertainment, great food, our chandlery tent, cardboard boat races and the world famous Fast and Furious Boat Building Competition.

The Festival would not be possible without our Corporate Sponsors as well as the Friends of the Festival. Our sponsors provide the financial resources to bring these plans into reality and present you with this great Festival year after year. I would encourage you to give these companies your support in return.

The Festival is a result of the combined efforts of a committee supported by dozens of volunteers. If you would like to join our team for a couple of hours to present the various festival activities, contact the Festival office - it takes many supporting hands to make this event happen. And if you would like to become a Friend of the Festival, click here for information on how you can become an active member of the Festival Family.

Thank you for coming to help us celebrate the Classic Boat Festival this summer. Mahone Bay is a great town and the Classic Boat Festival is the best of its kind you will find anywhere. Enjoy!
